Urges State, USAID to Reject Instructions, Ensure U.S. Global Health Programs Continue Relying on Science
WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, pushed the State Department and USAID to reject the Trump Administration’s efforts to ban the use of certain words such as “fetus,” “evidence-based” and “science-based” in official documents. In a letter to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and USAID Administrator Mark Green, Rep. Engel stressed the importance of relying on science and rejecting such instructions particularly for U.S. global health programs.

Bipartisan Bill Would Ensure Reconstruction Efforts Are Linked to Human Rights, Political Transition, and Safe Return for Syrian People
WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs; Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), a member of the Committees on Foreign Affairs and Energy and Commerce; Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA), a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs; and Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs today introduced legislation to ensure that the security of the Syrian people will be central to reconstruction and stabilization efforts in Syria. The No Assistance for Assad Act (H.R. 4681) would condition American support for such efforts in Assad-controlled territories on Syrian commitments to human rights; a political transition; and the safe, unfettered and voluntary return of Syrian refugees and internally displaced people.

Measure Urges Government to Abide by Constitution, Warns of Mass Atrocities
WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs; Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-IL), Co-Chair of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission; and Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations, introduced a resolution calling on Burundi’s political opposition to renounce violence and urging the government to comply with constitutional limits on presidential terms and re-engage in regional peace negotiations (H.Res.651).
