WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement:

"I congratulate Governor Haley and look forward to hearing from her soon about her views on foreign policy and America's work in the United Nations. Our country's permanent representative to the UN is among the most complicated foreign-policy positions in the Administration. Governor Haley will carry out critical diplomacy not just with UN officials, but with representatives of nearly 200 other countries.  I wish her well and offer any assistance she might need to make her tenure successful.

"I don't know the Governor, but I do know she represents some of the best that America stands for: a child of immigrants who grew up working in her family's business, going onto a career in public service and becoming the first woman and the first Indian-American to serve as her state's governor. She's a living example of the way immigrants and their families make the United States stronger.

I hope that President-elect Trump will resolve concerns about his overseas business interests so that Governor Haley's responsibilities and work to advance our national security are not overshadowed."
