Washington—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement on the passing of Brent Scowcroft:

“I’m saddened by the passing of Brent Scowcroft, who dedicated his life to protecting the American people. General Scowcroft served as National Security Advisor to two presidents, always seeking to harness the talents and expertise of America’s foreign and defense policy professionals so that the President could make informed and considered choices. While I didn’t agree with General Scowcroft on every issue, I always knew that he brought a fair mind, a commitment to country, a loyalty to America’s allies, and a belief in our system of government to all of his work.

"His life of service reminds us that – as I have long believed – politics should stop at the water’s edge. Sadly, his loss also underscores how far Donald Trump’s Republican Party has strayed from advancing our values and interests.

“I hope all Americans remember the example he set and the lessons he taught us through his life-long career of service and leadership."
