WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement:

“Today, I stand with the protestors in Iran. These demonstrations show that the Supreme Leader faces growing opposition among his own citizens. It’s no surprise, considering the rampant corruption and human-rights violations that are the hallmarks of the regime in Tehran. This groundswell shows that the Iranian people want a better future for themselves and their country.

“The eyes of the world are on Iran. The regime must not violate internationally guaranteed human rights and must permit peaceful protestors to gather and express themselves.”
