WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement regarding the presidential election in the Republic of Korea (ROK):

“I congratulate the South Korean people on another successful election. The world has kept close watch on this election, as it took place against a backdrop of both internal and external challenges that reach far beyond South Korea itself.

“I look forward to close cooperation with President-elect Moon Jae-in and the new government on the range of important concerns our countries share. As the United States and other powers work to address the growing threat posed by North Korea, it is critical for the United States and the ROK to leverage the strength of our alliance and maintain close cooperation between our governments.

“I'm confident that we will continue to deepen the U.S.-ROK alliance, a close relationship that has made—and will continue to make—both our nations stronger, safer, and more prosperous.”
