WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today welcomed the President’s signature into law of the Global Food Security Act of 2016 (S.1252):

"Nearly 800 million people around the world don't know how they will feed themselves on a day-to-day basis, and malnutrition is tied to nearly half the deaths of children under the age of five.  This is unconscionable, and the United States has a moral obligation to confront this challenge.

"So I applaud the President for signing the Global Food Security Act into law.  Thanks to the Administration's signature 'Feed the Future' initiative, we have started focusing on the root causes of hunger and poverty, helping communities around the world to feed themselves.  This law builds on that effort, making many of its provisions permanent, authorizing new investments, and laying out clear priorities for U.S. foreign-assistance programs that reduce global hunger.  This measure is going to make a real difference for people around the world, and I'm proud of the bipartisan work that got it to the President's desk."
