WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement regarding the terrorist attack on a peaceful demonstration in Kabul, Afghanistan:

"I'm angered and saddened by today's cowardly attack in Kabul, which targeted people taking part in a peaceful demonstration—one of the hallmarks of democracy. My condolences go out to all those affected by this horrific act.

"The people of Afghanistan want a free and prosperous country without the threat of violent extremism, and we want to see our partners in Afghanistan reach their aspirations. In the days ahead, the United States will stand with the people and authorities in Afghanistan as they recover from this attack, bring those responsible to justice, and continue the hard work of building a secure and stable democracy."
