Washington—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement after meeting with Honduran Attorney General Óscar Chinchilla:

“Yesterday, I told Honduran Attorney General Chinchilla that ending the Mission to Support the Fight against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (MACCIH) will significantly damage efforts to improve the rule of law in the country. I previously raised my concerns with Honduran government officials in August when I joined Speaker Pelosi on a visit to Tegucigalpa. With MACCIH gone, it is essential that the Attorney General’s office redouble efforts to hold corrupt actors accountable and support Honduran civil society. In addition, I emphasized with the Attorney General that four years after the killing of environmental activist Berta Cáceres, each and every mastermind of her murder must be held accountable in a court of law. As I have done over the past four years, I will continue to push for justice for Berta and her family and a Honduras free from corruption and the horrors of criminal violence.”
