WASHINGTON, DC—Representative Eliot L. Engel, the leading Democrat on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement regarding the recent elections in Egypt:
“After three years of tumultuous change, I hope that these elections will mark a turning point in Egypt. But that will only be the case if Egyptian leaders are willing to make the tough decisions that allow Egypt’s economy to grow and prosper, and will permit its people the dignity that they marched for three years ago. Egypt must now face its postponed challenges and the demands of its people.
“The United States and Egypt share a long-standing and productive partnership. In the years ahead, I hope we can continue to work together to deepen those ties and build a brighter future for the Egyptian people.”
