In El Salvador, Engel, Nadler, Lofgren, Jayapal, Espaillat Condemn President Trump Cutting Aid to Central America

Congressional Delegation in El Salvador Examining Root Causes of Migration

March 30, 2019

San Salvador, El Salvador—Representatives Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs; Jerrold Nadler, Chairman of the Committee on the Judiciary; Zoe Lofgren, Chairwoman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship; Pramila Jayapal, Vice Chair of the Immigration and Citizenship Subcommittee; and Adriano Espaillat, member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, today issued the following statement while participating in an official congressional delegation to El Salvador:

“As we visit El Salvador evaluating the importance of U.S. assistance to Central America to address the root causes of family and child migration, we are extremely disappointed to learn that President Trump intends to cut off aid to the region. The President’s approach is entirely counterproductive. It will only result in more children and families being forced to make the dangerous journey north to the U.S.-Mexico border.

“We will work with our colleagues in Congress to do everything in our power to push back on the President’s misguided approach to Central America.”
