WASHINGTON, DC—Representative Eliot L. Engel, the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement on the Tunisian Quartet’s Nobel Peace Prize award:

“I congratulate the Tunisian Quartet for winning the Nobel Peace Prize.  Their contribution to the advancement of democracy and a brighter, more hopeful future for all Tunisians has well earned them this honor.  At an uncertain time in Tunisian history, these individuals forged a path forward that emphasized compromise and collaboration.  Their choices and actions, which prevented the collapse of the nascent democracy, proved that Tunisia is leading the Arab world in the quest for freedom and democracy.

“The American people stand shoulder to shoulder with Tunisia as it confronts new challenges and opportunities.  The United States must continue to provide Tunisia with the tools it needs to move forward in its transition peace and security. “
