WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement:

“Saudi Arabia is an important ally and partner facing serious threats on its borders and within the kingdom, and it is in the interest of the United States to work with Saudi Arabia to address these challenges.

“The shared interests of the United States and Saudi Arabia are among the factors that must be weighed during Congressional scrutiny of the proposed $110 billion in arms sales to the kingdom. While it may take months for the details of these sales to be finalized, the House Foreign Affairs Committee should begin its oversight now.

“Three issues are paramount. First, the security of Israel must be assured. Second, we must examine the effect of these sales on the coalition’s involvement in Yemen. And third, the impact of these weapons sales on the Saudi defensive capabilities must be assessed.”
