WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement:

“I commend the Government of Ethiopia for its progress toward political reform, notably the release of political prisoners and the recent decision to lift the state of emergency. I am also encouraged that in his first months as Prime Minister, Dr. Abiy has begun to address the instability that has shaken the country over the past two years. I was proud to support legislation that passed the House in April underscoring Congress’s respect for human rights and inclusive governance in Ethiopia. I look forward to supporting the Government of Ethiopia’s continued reforms.”
