Washington, DC – Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement regarding President Biden’s announcement of support for the African Union joining the G-20:

“I am pleased by President Biden’s statement of support for the African Union’s permanent seat on the G-20. Throughout my tenure in Congress, and as Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, I have consistently championed African leaders having a more prominent seat at the table where decisions that impact us all are made. As we approach a historic U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, the United States has taken a significant step in demonstrating our strong commitment to this ideal by promoting African agency, equity, and leadership in the international community.

"I am proud of the work the Biden Administration has done to strengthen U.S. relationships on the continent and I strongly support the Administration’s efforts to advance reforms that improve representation and inclusion in international organizations.”
