Bronx, NY—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today released the following statement on the apparent poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny who is now going to seek treatment in Germany:
“I continue to closely monitor the developments surrounding the apparent poisoning of Alexei Navalny, a prominent Putin critic and the leader of Russia’s vibrant political opposition movement. In a powerful display of international leadership, Chancellor Merkel and our German allies have given Mr. Navalny, his family, and the Russian people new hope by opening their doors so that he may be treated in Germany.
“It is imperative that we work with Germany and our other allies to find and expose the truth and to hold those responsible to account. I am grateful for Chancellor Merkel’s ongoing leadership in this time of crisis, and I continue to hope for Mr. Navalny’s speedy recovery.”
