Washington D.C. – Ranking Member Eliot Engel, the senior Democratic member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement regarding the phone call between President Barack Obama and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

“The President’s telephone conversation with Iranian President Rouhani marks an important step in efforts to find a peaceful end to Iran’s quest for a nuclear weapons capability. While such engagement is an encouraging sign, for real progress to be made, Iran will have to take meaningful and verifiable steps to freeze, and ultimately end its nuclear weapons program.”
