WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement regarding the announced invitation for Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi to address a joint meeting of Congress:

“It’s great news that Congress plans to roll out the red carpet for Prime Minister Modi.  In the last few years, the long relationship between the United States and India has grown even stronger.  Our collaboration on issues from climate change and the environment to defense to economic growth shows just how many concerns our countries share.  I was pleased to join with Chairman Royce, as well as Representatives Holding and Bera, in calling for this invitation, and I will be glad to welcome Prime Minister Modi to Congress and hear his views on this important partnership.”
