WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, the top Democrat on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, met today on Capitol Hill with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at the Secretary’s request. Rep. Engel relayed that, if elected Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee for the 116th Congress, he intended to make oversight a central element of the Committee’s agenda, and he expressed hope that State Department leadership would be collaborative, responsive, and respectful of Congress’s Article I oversight prerogatives and responsibilities. Rep. Engel also expressed his appreciation to Secretary Pompeo for establishing lines of communication in advance of the new Congress.
