WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement regarding the Government of Sudan’s use of chemical weapons in Darfur:
“The Government of Sudan’s use of chemical weapons against civilians in Darfur’s Jebel Marra region is absolutely barbaric. Today’s report that the government has carried out at least 30 chemical attacks since January adds to the long list of war crimes for which President Omar al-Bashir should be tried at the International Criminal Court. The world must not stand for future criminal attacks against civilians, and I ask the government to allow humanitarian access to the region so that the victims of these heinous crimes can receive the medical care they require.”
