WASHINGTON, DC—Representative Eliot L. Engel, the leading Democrat on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, made the following statement regarding Kosovo’s general elections:

“Yesterday, the citizens of Kosovo went to the polls to choose their leaders, to chart a path forward for their country, and to show the world the progress of a thriving young democracy. They should be proud of what they've accomplished, and I send my warmest congratulations.

“For two years in a row, Kosovo has held open, free, and transparent elections which have met international standards. On the ground, Kosovo's electoral authorities, the Kosovo police, international organizations, and our own embassy did tremendous work to make sure all the citizens of Kosovo could cast their votes in a secure environment.

“In the days ahead, much work remains to continue the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, and to advance Kosovo's progress toward Euro-Atlantic integration. The people of the United States are standing side-by-side with the people of Kosovo, and I look forward to working with the new government, when it is formed, to help meet these challenges.”
