WASHINGTON, DC—Representative Eliot L. Engel, the top Democrat on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement on the murder of prominent Russian dissident Boris Nemtsov:
“Yesterday's brutal murder of Boris Nemtsov—literally in the shadow of the Kremlin’s walls—is a chilling reminder of the risks faced by those in Russia who oppose Vladimir Putin’s violent kleptocracy. Mr. Nemtsov was well known and respected here in Congress. His fearlessness in exposing high-level corruption is a testament to his patriotism and an inspiration to those seeking a brighter future for Russia. I extend my heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends, and colleagues and condemn the regime that has fostered a climate of fear and hatred where such murders can happen and happen with impunity.”
