Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Representatives Sires, Clarke, Hastings, Deutch, Lee, Meeks, Jeffries, Lowey, Wilson, Espaillat, Wasserman Schultz, Shalala, Levin, Mucarsel-Powell, Omar, and Díaz-Balart today made the following statement on the tenth anniversary of the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti:

“Today marks ten years since Haiti was struck by a devastating earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people and left more than a million Haitians homeless. Our hearts continue to go out to all of the Haitians impacted by the earthquake. Over the last decade, Congress has supported the Haitian people in rebuilding their country.

“As recovery efforts continue, Haiti still faces a crisis of a different magnitude. Mass protests have continued into the new year as political and economic discord persists. The United States and its allies must stand with the Haitian people who are fighting to have their voices heard, to end corruption, and to have their government function on behalf of its citizens. Haiti needs us now more than ever before, and we must partner with Haitians and the Haitian-American community to support their efforts to restore peace, stability and a full and thriving democracy to their country.”
