Bronx, NY—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement:
“The President’s veto shows his contempt for a bipartisan majority of Congress, for the people Congress represents, for Congress’s war powers established in the Constitution, and for the American values embodied in this resolution. This veto sends a message that the Administration lacks commitment to a political solution to the catastrophic conflict and humanitarian crisis in Yemen. I will work in the months ahead to push all parties to the conflict—Houthi, Saudi, Emirati, and Yemeni government alike—to adhere to the UN-led peace process efforts.
“And the President should understand that this isn’t the end of Congress reclaiming its prerogatives when it comes to foreign policy. It’s just the start. The Foreign Affairs Committee under my leadership will use its authority to legislate and conduct rigorous oversight with the goal of putting American values and American interests back at the center of our foreign policy.”
