Washington—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today delivered the following statement on Afghanistan's election:
"Congratulations to the millions of Afghans who courageously journeyed to the polls today in the face of violence and intimidation to cast their votes.
"This election comes in the midst of increased violence and uncertainty for the country’s future. I hope that Afghanistan’s next leader is viewed as credible by the Afghan people and is able to unite Afghans to advance a negotiation process that can lead to peace and stability for the country.
"I look forward to working with the new government to advance U.S.-Afghan relations, and to further build upon the progress Afghanistan since 2001."
