Washington, DC – Today, Representatives Gregory W. Meeks, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Albio Sires, Chairman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee, issued the following joint statement on the 3rd anniversary of the assassination of Marielle Franco, a Rio de Janeiro City Councilor and human rights activist. Marielle Franco was fatally shot with impunity on March 14th, 2018:

“Today marks 3 years since Rio de Janeiro City Council member and human rights advocate Marielle Franco was assassinated. To this day, we are still waiting for those who ordered Marielle’s killing to be brought to justice. We stand in solidarity with the Brazilian people as they continue to call for justice for Marielle, an end to systemic discrimination against Afro-Brazilians, and increased protections for lawmakers across the country.”
