Washington--Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today issued the following statement:
"This year, the House of Representatives has actively reasserted its constitutional war powers in ways that it hasn’t in years past and has sought to limit President Trump’s ability to conduct dangerous unauthorized military actions. As negotiations on the National Defense Authorization Act continue, I remain committed to crucial provisions I helped write that will reclaim Congress’ war powers, help end ongoing wars, and stop new ones from starting. To name just the sections focused on the Middle East, I cosponsored an amendment with Rep. Ro Khanna to prevent unauthorized war with Iran and an amendment with Rep. Barbara Lee to repeal the long-outdated Iraq war authorization.
"I will also continue advocating for the amendment I offered with Rep. Tom Malinowski to stop arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the UAE, as well as an amendment I wrote to prevent the Trump administration from circumventing congressional checks on arms exports. Finally, I remain committed to retaining amendments that would end U.S. military support to the war in Yemen, along with many other critical provisions. We should not compromise on these priorities."
