WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement on the reported selection by the President-Elect of retired General Michael Flynn as the next National Security Advisor:

“General Flynn deserves our thanks for his service, as do all men and women who serve our country in uniform. However, I have questions about his appointment as National Security Advisor. General Flynn has frequently engaged in hateful anti-Muslim rhetoric; appeared regularly on Russia's state-owned, anti-American propaganda TV network; and received sensitive intelligence briefings while lobbying on behalf of foreign governments.

“The President deserves advisors who have an even-keeled approach to foreign policy and a clear record of upholding our values at home and around the world.  General Flynn does not appear meet those standards.”
