WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today delivered the following statement on Yom Hashoah:

“Today’s Holocaust Remembrance Day—Yom Hashoah—comes at a critical time. Jewish communities in the United States and around the world are facing threats and persecution. Last fall, we saw the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the history of the United States at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. Throughout the country, we’ve witnessed an alarming, record-setting number of anti-Semitic assaults. Day after day, we see more and more anti-Semitic language and images creeping into the mainstream of our society.

“Just this week, we saw swastikas scrawled on the wall at a mall in Yonkers. I’m horrified that such disgusting acts of hate have become an everyday reality, terrorizing my community and constituents.

“On Yom Hashoah, we remember what can happen when this bigotry goes unchecked. We remember the pain and the unprecedented suffering. We remember the six million lives taken. And we commit to never let this happen again.

“We honor these memories by standing strong in our commitment to combat intolerance and hatred in all its forms. The United States, the global community, and every individual must remain dedicated to fighting the evil that led to that darkest time in history. We must join together to build a future of greater tolerance and justice.”
