Washington, DC?— Today, Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement welcoming the leaders of Australia, India and Japan to the fourth in-person Quad Leaders’ Summit, hosted by President Biden in Wilmington, Delaware:

I welcome the leaders of Australia, India, and Japan to the United States for the sixth Quad Leaders Summit, all of which have taken place under the Biden-Harris Administration. This summit symbolizes the four nations’ steadfast commitment to advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific.

There is strong bipartisan consensus that the Quad advances U.S. interests by upholding the rules-based international order, thwarting coercion, and promoting democratic values and shared prosperity for our citizens and the people of the region. But we must sustain political and institutional support for the Quad across all four capitols to ensure sustained cooperation in the range of complex global issues on which the Quad engages—from climate to health to space. That’s why the House passed my bill H.R. 5375 – Strengthening the Quad Act to establish a Quad Intra-Parliamentary Working Group to facilitate engagement between the four legislatures.

I call on the Senate to pass this legislation before the end of the year and send it to the President’s desk, and I commend the Biden-Harris administration for its resolute leadership in promoting regional stability and resilience with our democratic partners.”
