WASHINGTON, DC—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement regarding the reported nuclear test in North Korea:

“Even as details remain sketchy, I’m deeply troubled by reports that North Korea conducted a nuclear weapons test earlier today.  This sort of reckless and provocative behavior violates North Korea’s international obligations, undermines regional stability, and further isolates the rogue regime from the rest of the world.  I’ve visited North Korea twice, I’ve seen the reality on the ground, and I know that the regime’s present course will only make life worse for the people of that country.

“As we learn more about this alleged test, the United States must work with our allies, particularly South Korea and Japan, to develop an appropriate response.  For now, it’s clear that Russia and China—the lifelines of North Korea’s regime—should do more to discourage these dangerous actions and try to bring North Korea back to the six-party talks.”
