WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement regarding the terrorist attacks in Brussels, Belgium:
“My heart goes out to the people of Belgium today, especially to the victims of the attacks and their loved ones. We are witnessing the latest searing reminder that terrorism is a threat that ignores borders and spans regions.
“With the smoke still clearing, the focus must be on helping those affected and addressing any additional threats. In the days ahead, we need to work with our Belgian partners and other allies to determine how these attacks were carried out, ramp up efforts to prevent future violence, push back against a false and destructive ideology, and hold whoever is behind these attacks accountable.
“Any loss of life at the hands of terrorists is unacceptable, and the United States will stand with our partners and remain vigilant in our efforts to wipe out the threat of violent extremism. Even in the wake of an attack like today's, terrorism will never succeed in deterring us from that aim or in dimming the light of democracy.”
