WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and co-chair of the Bipartisan Taskforce for Combating Anti-Semitism, today issued the following statement marking Holocaust Remembrance Day:

“On this Holocaust Remembrance Day, we recall the darkest chapter of human history—the Holocaust. We must not forget that this tragedy claimed the lives of 11 million—including six million Jews.

“We are currently witnessing one of the worst surges of anti-Semitism at home and abroad in the post-Holocaust era. Overseas, we’ve seen the closure of Jewish Community Centers in Sweden amid security threats, tombstones desecrated at a Jewish cemetery in France, damage to Holocaust memorials in places like Greece, and a Chabad rabbi brutally attacked in Ukraine.  In our country, we’ve seen Jewish Community Centers terrorized, Jewish cemeteries desecrated multiple times, and swastikas in major urban centers of New York and Pennsylvania. And alarmingly, we’ve also seen the steady rise of anti-Semitic political parties in Hungary, Greece, and even France.

“Combating the ancient racism that led to the Holocaust must remain a priority—in our country and worldwide. As we seek to reinforce the words of ‘never again,’ we look to the survivors of the Holocaust to inspire our struggle against bigotry. This hatred knows no borders, and we must unite with like-minded people around the globe to ensure such evil cannot and will not prevail.”
