Washington, DC – Today, Chairman Gregory W. Meeks released the following statement on President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the United States and address to a joint session of Congress:

"Today, I was honored to be part of the welcome party for President Zelensky's visit to our nation's capital, his first trip outside Ukraine since Russia's brutal, renewed invasion of Ukraine began in February of this year. It was a privilege to welcome him to the Capitol building for his joint address; his words served as both an inspiration and a wake-up call for us all.

"President Zelensky's visit could not have come at a more critical moment in the war and in history. This war is about Russian aggression against Ukraine and the security of Europe, and it is also about democracy over tyranny, and freedom over oppression. With their daily heroism and unshakeable bravery in resisting Russia's aggression, the Ukrainian people are engaged in a fight for the collective good.

"As Russia continues to bomb Ukrainian cities and power stations, murder civilians, and illegally occupy Ukrainian territory, Ukraine's resolve is unshaken. By passing the omnibus package and securing an additional $45 billion in support for Ukraine, the United States can meet this moment and do our part to give the Ukrainian people the tools they need to win."
