Washington, DC – Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement regarding the evacuation of U.S. personnel from Sudan:

“I am relieved that the Biden Administration safely evacuated all U.S. Government personnel in Sudan. I commend the steadfast work of U.S. diplomats and military professionals, as well as the support of partner nations in the region, that made the evacuation mission a success. This situation is a stark reminder of the risks U.S. Embassy personnel undertake every day across the globe in their service to the American people.

“I urge the parties to the conflict to implement a humanitarian ceasefire immediately to allow safe passage for all civilians who wish to flee the violence and allow lifesaving supplies to be provided to those in need. American citizens who remain in Sudan should maintain close contact with the U.S. State Department about their condition and whereabouts.”
