Washington, DC — Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today released the following statement on the 15th anniversary of the end of the Sri Lankan civil war:
“As we commemorate the 15th anniversary of the end of Sri Lanka’s almost 30-year Civil War this week, I solemnly acknowledge the deep loss and immense suffering endured by the people of Sri Lanka, especially the women, children, and families who bore the heaviest burden of this conflict.
“Though much has changed in the past 15 years, justice for the many families who endured, especially in the war’s final days, remains delayed. It is vital that the Government of Sri Lanka fulfill its commitments to address the root causes of the conflict and meet the needs of all ethnic and religious groups. Implementation of post-war commitments regarding meaningful devolution of power, justice and accountability, and reconciliation must continue moving forward. Civil society has an important role to play in realizing these aspirations.
“Justice delayed is justice denied and 15 years after the war’s end more progress on these issues is imperative for the country to move forward. I will continue to work in Congress to support an inclusive, peaceful, multi-religious and multi-ethnic society in Sri Lanka.”
