Washington, DC- Representatives Gregory W. Meeks and Michael McCaul, Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, along with Representatives Karen Bass and Chris Smith, Chair and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, and Global Human Rights, today issued the following statement regarding reports of a failed coup attempt in Sudan: 

“We strongly condemn any efforts that undermine Sudan’s progress towards a civilian-led political system that respects human rights and the rule of law. We also denounce any actions aimed at undermining efforts to stabilize Sudan, including in the East of the country, and underscore the need for thorough reform and robust civilian oversight of Sudan’s security institutions.  

“Congress will continue to support initiatives that advance durable peace and democracy in Sudan through the civilian-led transitional government. This requires an unrelenting commitment to advancing and formalizing peace processes in Sudan, effective and accountable governance, progress toward civilian control of Sudan’s security institutions, economic reforms, and strong oversight of government financial expenditures. Congress further underscored this commitment by enacting the Sudan Democratic Transition, Accountability, and Fiscal Transparency Act of 2020.   

“The United States will continue to stand with the people of Sudan in recognition of their hard-fought gains to create a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous society.”
