Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel, the Ranking Member on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs released the following statement regarding India’s 2014 Elections, which begin today:

“Today marks the beginning of the largest exercise of democracy in the world. As hundreds of millions of Indians -- beginning in the state of Assam today, and continuing over the next month -- head to the more than 930,000 polling stations throughout the country, I want to wish the Indian people well as they undertake this massive endeavor.

“As one of the founding members of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans, I’m extremely pleased by the transformation that has occurred in the U.S.-India relationship over the past couple of decades. This transformation could not have happened without the strong leadership of both major political parties in India and the United States.

“I look forward to hearing the results of the election and to working with India’s new government to further advance the U.S.-India partnership. Though we will have challenges, the potential of what our two countries can do together is limitless.”
