Washington, DC — Today, Representatives Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Sara Jacobs, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, issued a statement on the upcoming peace talks in Geneva, Switzerland, which begin tomorrow and seek to address the ongoing war in Sudan. This conflict has triggered the world's largest humanitarian crisis, displacing over 10 million people and plunging more than half the population into acute hunger.
"The ongoing, unacceptable violence in Sudan has led to tragic losses of innocent lives. With peace talks starting in Geneva, Switzerland, tomorrow, it is imperative that the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) fully commit to engaging in good faith to take steps to end their brutal war. We are encouraged by the inclusion of other stakeholders in Geneva to strengthen diplomatic efforts to facilitate productive talks, which present a vital opportunity to end the horrific violence, establish a ceasefire, and restore cross-border humanitarian access to help civilians in dire need.
"We applaud members of Sudanese civil society who, notwithstanding the violence, threats, and deprivation they and other Sudanese face on a daily basis, have worked tirelessly to provide assistance and comfort through mutual aid and initiatives like emergency response rooms. They are harnessing the power, diversity, and ingenuity of Sudan's people to forge a brighter future. We are looking to the parties in Geneva to make progress, and we hope the talks will help lay the groundwork for a peaceful, prosperous Sudan that is responsive to its people's democratic aspirations."
