WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representatives Gregory W. Meeks and Michael T. McCaul, Chair and Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement regarding recent events in Sudan, including reports of the use of military equipment and excessive force against peaceful pro-democracy protestors.
“We strongly and unequivocally condemn the Sudanese military’s violent crackdown against pro-democracy protestors and other human rights violations. These actions further undermine the civilian-led transition in Sudan. The Sudanese people are losing faith and confidence in a now broken process that was designed to pave the way toward democracy, economic growth, and meaningful political reforms.
“The House Foreign Affairs Committee, through passage of a concurrent resolution condemning the October 25th military coup and the Sudan Democracy Act, has demonstrated its bipartisan commitment to support the democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people and hold spoilers accountable. We will continue to apply pressure on Sudan’s leaders to follow through on their commitments, including by withholding U.S. assistance and imposing targeted sanctions.”
