BRONX, NY—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, this week announced that the Committee will hold its full first hearing and markup of the 116th Congress on Wednesday, February 6, 2019. The Committee will convene to hear expert witness testimony on U.S. Policy in the Arabian Peninsula. Immediately following the hearing, the Committee will consider H.J.Res 37, a resolution dealing with war powers in Yemen.

“It’s a pivotal time for us to evaluate United States policy in the Arabian Peninsula. We need to take a hard look at how the actions of U.S. partners affect U.S. interests in the Gulf, how we’re addressing human rights, and the strategic significance of countries in the region. We must ensure that we have a comprehensive understanding of the conflict in Yemen, including the drivers of hunger and disease, the role that Iran plays, and the prospects for a sustainable political solution,” said Chairman Engel.

“And it’s particularly fitting that we end that discussion by considering a war powers resolution on American involvement in the conflict in Yemen, where we are seeing a horrific humanitarian crisis. Congress must debate the U.S. role in Yemen, and I look forward to our Committee advancing that debate.”
