Bronx, NY--Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement on reports that Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch's has retired from the State Department:

“When we look back at this challenging time in American history, there’s no doubt that Marie Yovanovitch will be seen as one of the heroes. For more than three decades, she has been a model of service to our country: helping to advance our values and interests while striving to build a safer, more just world. Ambassador Yovanovitch built a reputation for standing up to corrupt governments. Her legacy will be standing up for our own democracy and the rule of law while enduring mistreatment and intimidation from the very people who should have had her back. I have no doubt that history will treat her with the respect she deserves. Ambassador Yovanovitch has earned the thanks of the American people. She is a woman of courage and character, and I salute her and thank her for her service.”
