WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement on the anniversary of the massacre of Bosnian Muslims at Srebrenica:

“Twenty-four years ago today began the worst mass killing in Europe since the Holocaust. Bosnian Serb forces rounded up thousands of Bosnian Muslim men and boys, bussed them to execution sites near Srebrenica, and brutally slaughtered 8,000 innocent lives, burying them in mass graves still being uncovered today. Twenty-four years later, thousands and thousands of people continue to seek justice. War criminals still roam free. If the region is ever to find lasting peace and stability, those responsible must be held to account.

“This is why we must never forget these heinous acts of genocide, and must always remain vigilant to prevent this sort of violence from happening again. I stand with the victims of the massacre at Srebrenica, and the thousands of others who suffered from ethnic cleansing in the Balkans in the 1990s. I will continue to push for justice and for closure for the victims of these horrific crimes.”
