Washington, DC — Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today issued the following statement regarding ongoing violence perpetrated by narco-gangs across the country:

I am deeply disturbed by the violent acts committed by gangs and other criminal groups this week in Ecuador, and I support President Noboa in his efforts to restore peace and public safety while upholding human rights in this challenging time.

The health, well-being, and safety of the Ecuadorean people is important not just in our partnerships but for the stability of the whole region. I remain committed to US cooperation on security, development, and anti-corruption efforts with Ecuador.
