Washington, DC – Today, Representatives Gregory W. Meeks and Michael McCaul, Chair and Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Albio Sires and Mark Green, Chair and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Civilian Security, Migration and International Economic Policy, and Andy Levin, Founder and Co-Chair of the House Haiti Caucus, issued the following statement condemning threats against Haitian human rights defender Pierre Espérance and staff of the National Human Rights Defense Network (RNDDH):
“Reports of death threats against Mr. Espérance in retaliation for his work are extremely alarming, and the U.S. Congress is focused on ensuring the safety of Mr. Espérance and his colleagues. Any further attempts to silence, intimidate, harass, threaten, or cause harm to Mr. Espérance or RNDDH staff are intolerable. We call on the Haitian authorities to investigate any threats made against Mr. Espérance and take all necessary steps to ensure his safety and the safety of his colleagues.”
