Washington, D.C. – Today, Representatives Gregory W. Meeks, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Ted Deutch, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Middle East, North Africa and Global Counterterrorism, issued the following statement in response to Tunisian President Kais Saied dismissing the country’s prime minister and suspending its parliament over the weekend:

“We are seriously concerned by events in Tunisia over the weekend that threaten to jeopardize Tunisia’s important democratic transition and constitutional reform process. We call on all parties to respect and adhere to the rule of law, work within established institutions, and engage in constructive dialogue to address differences. We implore all parties to refrain from violence and work towards a lasting solution to political tensions. We also note and appreciate the panoply of civil society actors in Tunisia which should be included in continued political dialogue. The House Committee on Foreign Affairs looks forward to working with the Biden Administration to help encourage Tunisia, a valuable U.S. partner in the region, back onto a democratic path.”
