Washington, DC  Today, Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement regarding the Biden administration’s sanctions on Chinese officials for human rights abuses in Xinjiang against the Uighur population. The sanctions were coordinated with the European Union, the U.K, and Canada, which all launched similar sanctions.

“I welcome the administration’s announcement of Global Magnitsky Act economic sanctions against individuals involved with the genocide of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang. Sanctions are most impactful when applied in coordination with other countries, and I commend the administration’s effort to working with our transatlantic allies and partners. Today’s announcement demonstrates the United States' return to a strong leadership role in combating serious human rights abuses and working with like-minded partners to promote accountability for grave and serious violations of human rights.”
