Washington—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Representative Michael McCaul, the committee’s ranking member, today made the following statement:
“We congratulate Dr. Tsai Ing-wen on her reelection as the President of Taiwan, and the millions of Taiwanese people who demonstrated their democratic spirit by voting in the presidential and Legislative Yuan elections. These elections again demonstrate Taiwan’s vibrant, pluralistic democracy, and commitment to a free and open society.
“The United States and Taiwan are both members of a community of democracies that share common values and safeguard the personal dignity and liberty of their people.
“We look forward to continuing to work with the Tsai administration and the 23 million people of Taiwan to deepen and broaden the partnership between the United States and Taiwan and together to ensure a prosperous and peaceful Indo-Pacific.”
