Engel Leads Landmark Climate Bill to Pass the House

Washington—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today delivered the following statement after H.R.9, the Climate Action Now Act, passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 231-190. H.R. 9 was favorably reported out of the Foreign Affairs Committee on April 9, 2019 by a vote of 24-16:
 
“Today we sent a message to the President, to the American people and to the world that we recognize the seriousness of the climate crisis and that we intend to do our part to address it.  Climate change is a grave threat that transcends borders and requires international coordination.  That’s why it’s so critical that we work shoulder-to-shoulder with our friends and partners around the world.
 
“H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act, would require the Trump Administration to remain in the Paris Climate Accord and to develop a serious, carefully considered plan for how the United States will meet its commitments to reduce pollution and safeguard our environment.
 
“I’m pleased that the House today voted to right the path and reassert American leadership on this pressing global crisis. There’s more work to be done, and this isn’t the end of this fight. But today represents the first step in reclaiming American moral courage in confronting the challenge of climate change. I’m proud to have co-authored this legislation and moved it through the legislative process, and I’m grateful for all the hard work of my House colleagues in making this day a reality.  I encourage the Senate to reject President Trump’s dangerous actions and join us in working to limit climate change, enhance our national security, strengthen our economy, and pass on a healthy and sustainable future for our children.”
