WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement:

"After nearly five years of violent conflict in South Sudan, I was pleased to see that the United Nations Security Council has finally imposed an arms embargo on South Sudan. This is a measure that should have been adopted several years ago, and I commend our mission to the UN, and the governments of Côte d’Ivoire, the United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Poland, the Netherlands, Peru, and Kuwait for their crucial support on this vote. That said, while an arms embargo will not end the conflict in South Sudan on its own, it will go a long way towards reducing the continuing suffering of the South Sudanese people."
