WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today released the following statement:

“I hope authorities release opposition leaders as well as any peaceful protesters who have been detained. These protests are a clear example of why human rights must be at the forefront of the next round of American engagement with Sudan. The Government of Sudan needs to realize that sanctions we eased last year can be reimposed at any time.”
